Origin of Famous Car Brands around the World Part-1

The automobile sector is not only an important economic sector but also one of the maximum profit generating business. It provides employment opportunity to millions of people throughout the world.

It would be interesting to note that despite the US and the China are two of the largest automobile producers that combinedly produces above 40% of the cars used worldwide but it was Germany who was the pioneer in manufacturing of cars.

In late 1870, Karl Benz and Nikolaus Otto of Germany independently developed four-stroke internal combustion engine and attached it to a coach, which led to the modern-day motor car.

Listed below are some of the world famous car brands and their country of origin:

United States of America

Cadillac: Cadillac Automobile Company was formed in Detroit in August 1902. Some of the Models produced since 2002 include the CTS, DTS, BLS, STS, SRX and the XLR.

Chevrolet: Chevrolet was founded in 1911 by Louis Chevrolet and William Durant. Models produced in 2007 include the Avero, Cobalt, Corvette, HHR, Impala, Malibu and the Monte Carlo.

Chrysler: Chrysler Corporation was formed in 1925 by Walter P Chrysler from the assets of the Maxwell Motor Company that first produced cars in 1904. Models available in 2007 include the PT Cruiser and Convertible, Town & Country, Sebring Sedan and Convertible, the 300, Pacifica, Crossfire, and Aspen.

Ford: In 1896 Henry Ford built his first “horseless carriage” which he sold to fund work on an improved model. In 2007, Ford also manufactured cars under names like Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, Volvo, Jaguar and Land Rover. Models produced in the United States in 2007 include the Focus, Fusion, Five Hundred, Crown Victoria and the Mustang.

Germany

Audi: August Horch & Cie (company) was established in 1899 and in 1901 Horch produced his first cars. Models produced in 2007 include the Q7, R8, TT, A3, A4, A5, A6 and the A8.

BMW: In 1928 the Beyer Motor Works company acquired the Dixi factory and produced their first model, the BMW-Dixi 3/15. Its 2007 models include the 3, 5, 6 & 7-Series, M5, M6, X3, X5 and Z4 cars.

Mercedes (Daimler-Benz): Daimler-Benz AG company was formed in 1926. In the year 2007, it produced – the A,B,C,E & S Class, SLK/SL/SLR, CLK/CLS/Cl, M, and R models.

Opel: Opel Company was formed in 1863, it started with Lutzmann cars under licence in 1898 and French Darracq cars two years later. In 2007, it produced the Astra, Corsa, Meriva, Speedster, Tigra, Vectra, Vivaro and Zafira.

Volkswagen: In the mid-1930s Ferdinand Porsche was awarded a contract by Hitler to build what became known as the “People’s Car”. In 2007, it produced the Eos, Fox, Golf, Jetta, New Beetle, Passat, Phaeton, Polo, Sharan, Touareg, and Touran.

Great Britain

Aston Martin: It was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford and the first car to bear its name was produced in 1915. In March 2007, the Ford Motor Company sold Aston Martin to a British consortium led by David Richards.

Bentley: Bentley Motor Company was founded in 1918 by two brothers; Walter and H Bentley. Its 2007 Models include the Brooklands, Arnage, Azure, and Continental.

Jaguar: In 1932 the company produced its first two-door SS1. Models produced since 1980 include the XJS 5.3, XK8 and XJ8. The 2007 range includes the XK, XJ, and XF range, the S-Types, and the X-Types.

Rolls-Royce: Rolls-Royce Limited was formed in 1906 by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce. In Jan 2003, BMW’s subsidiary “Rolls-Royce Motor Cars” launched their Phantom model.
