Cars are classified into several categories. They are often distinguished and categorised based on their look, design, boot space and a number of seats. Car Jargons are the special words or expressions used in the automobile industry.

Given below are some common car types:

Hatchback

These are convertible passenger cars which may feature a second row, fold down seating. An upward openable rear door is used to fold/unfold the seats. Seating space could be utilised to accommodate maximum passengers or folded to accommodate bulky cargo. Cars with hatchback usually have limited boots space. Maruti Alto, Hyundai Santro Xing, Indica V2 are some of the cars with the rear hatchback.

Fastback

Fastback car styles have a roofline that slopes down at the back. Automobile body comprises of a single convex curve from the top to the rear bumper that helps in aerodynamics to minimise drag on the run. Hyundai Verna and Accent are some of these with the reclining fastback.

Sedan

Sedan cars are small passenger cars which primarily focuses on passenger comfort. They are usually five-seater cars with an extended boot space. Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Ciaz, Hyundai Xcent and Tata Zest are some of the sedan vehicles.

SUV

SUV or Sports Utility Vehicles are big cars, which were designed to go over rough surfaces or off the road. Usually equipped with four-wheel drive these type of vehicles can accommodate between five to seven people. Toyota Fortuner, tata safari, Subaru forester, Grand Cherokee are some of its kind.

MUV

MUV or Multi Utility Vehicle are like minivans that could accommodate large families with seven or more members. It has rear side doors, rear side windows, and interior fittings to accommodate passengers similar to a station waggon. Cars belonging to this segment are known for their looks, durability and reliability. Some of these include Toyota Innova, Mahindra Xylo, Tata Sumo and Mahindra Bolero.

Luxury Cars

Luxury cars do not have a special definition. They could be a sedan, an SUV or any other unique model. They are extremely costly are meant for the rich class. These luxurious cars, however, provide great comfort, and are very rich in terms of features,  high-end technology and have extremely luxurious rear seats. Limousine, Bentley Mulsanne, BMW-M series and Porsche Panamera are some of these.
